Hi,
I’m Leela, a landscape architect turned ceramic artist. I believe pottery is poetry you can touch. Ceramics are exquisite—they influence you immediately when you touch, look at, or hold a piece. They embrace both the space inside and outside, which is why they are so beautiful to me.
I enjoy throwing and working with clay because you see the art change shape instantly. You learn not only how to begin, but also when to stop. You appreciate your fellow clay community, yet you also find your own quiet moments.
Teaching pottery has been an important part of my journey. I was an art teacher before, and I enjoy helping people get started with new, challenging art forms. Wheel throwing and handbuilding clay can be learned through fundamental steps. I teach based on these steps while adjusting to each student’s needs. I not only teach, but I also learn from my students—it’s always two-way communication.
Learning pottery is like riding a bike; you need to build hand muscle memory. Once you have it, the process flows and becomes a ritual—a therapeutic rhythm that sings.
During the process, you can still manipulate the shape. You see all the truths and faults that occur during throwing. The memory of the clay reflects how you have worked. It’s not about being perfect; rather, it’s the imperfections that make ceramics more meaningful.
